"Rincon Falls, Trinidad: A Print Series by Chris Ofili" @ UR Museums
Location:
50 Crenshaw Way
Richmond, VA 23226

Note:
January 12 to September 26, 2010. Chris Ofili (British, born 1968) explores contemporary black experience in his work using references from traditional African art, images of popular culture, and influences from hip-hop music. A waterfall on the north coast of Trinidad inspired this series of prints now in the permanent collection of the Harnett Print Study Center. Ofili experiments with themes of nature and landscape to challenge his skills and to "re-learn" printmaking. He used photographs and videos he had taken as source material, combined with his own memories of hiking around Trinidad where he moved in 2005, to inspire his somewhat improvisational compositions. Ofili has had one-person exhibitions at galleries and museums throughout the world, including the Tate Britain in London, The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, and the 50th Venice Biennale, Italy. His work is in several public and private collections, including The British Museum, London, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Rubell Family Collection, Miami, and the Deutsche Bank, Frankfurt, Germany. Call 804-289-8276 for information.

Sit-In | Stand Out: A Project Recognizing the 50th Anniversary Of the Thalhimers Lunch Counter Sit-In @ CenterStage
Location:
600 E. Grace St.
Richmond, VA 23219

Note:
On February 20, 1960, more than 200 students from Virginia Union University walked from the Lombardy Street campus to the shopping district along Broad and Grace streets. Once there, they entered the Whites Only lunch counter at Thalhimers and were refused service, though they remained in their seats until the store closed. Two days later, on February 22, 34 VUU students returned to Thalhimers and were again refused service. This time around, they were arrested for trespassing at the request of store management. The students became known as the Richmond 34, a reference to their place in the Civil Rights Movement as sit-ins began being used as a form of peaceful protest against segregationist policies. Over time, Thalhimers responded by integrating its facilities, and other local businesses followed. The 1964 U.S. Civil Rights Act outlawed racial discrimination in schools, public spaces, and in places of employment. On February 22, 2010, Richmond CenterStage will host Sit-In|Stand Out, an event honoring the 50th anniversary of the Sit-In at the Thalhimers building, now a part of the Richmond CenterStage downtown performing arts center. In addition, Virginia Union University will host a series of lectures, performances and commemoratory events from February 17-22. On Monday, February, 22 50 years to the day of the Richmond 34s Sit-In a Historic Marker will be dedicated at Sixth and Broad streets at Richmond CenterStage. The commemoration will be capped off by special evening performances by Amaranth Contemporary Dances "Equalizing the Lines: Prelude to a New Dream" followed by "An Evening of Reflection" with John Legend. We hope you can join us. For tickets to John Legend, please call (804) 327-5752. www.johnlegend.com

Gallery Walk: Cold War Crisis: The U-2 Incident" w/Francis Gary Powers, Jr. @ Virginia Historical Society
Location:
428 Boulevard
Richmond, VA 23221

Note:
Francis Gary Powers, Jr. is Founder of the Cold War Museum and son of the U-2 pilot. Exhibit: Cold War Crisis: The U-2 Incident
January 16May 30, 2010 On May 1, 1960, an American U-2 reconnaissance plane was shot down over the Soviet Union by a surface-to-air missile. Francis Gary Powersa civilian pilot flying for the Central Intelligence Agencywas unable to activate the self-destruct mechanism and the plane crashed largely intact. News of the event caused Premier Khrushchev to storm out of a summit conference in Paris with President Eisenhower. Because the U-2 was specifically designed for covert surveillance, Powers, a native Virginian, was tried and convicted as a spy and sentenced to ten years imprisonment. In 1962 he was exchanged in Germany for a Soviet agent.

Midnight Book Club March Meetup
Our first meeting will be held at Colony Coffee just to give us a chance to meet and greet and talk about all the great books we'll be reading! Colony Coffee is a great little coffee shop, one I used a lot of when I was involved in November's National Novel Writing Month. But I'll look for a venue that has more friendly evening hours as I realize that evenings will probably be more convenient for most members. Let me know if you have suggestions!

March Meetup @ Legend Brewery (Downtown/Manchester)
Drinking Skeptically is an informal social event designed to promote fellowship and networking among skeptics, critical-thinkers, and like-minded individuals. Drinking Skeptically provides an opportunity for skeptics to talk, share ideas (and yes, drink) in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. We discuss the issues of the day and whatever else is on our minds. But most of all, we have fun while promoting skepticism, science, and rationality. Don't drink? Don't let that stop you from joining us! Some of the world's most famous skeptics are teetotallers, and we are happy to have you! Visiting a Drinking Skeptically location from out of town? Stop on by! Skeptics are a friendly bunch and there's always room for one more... Remember that drinking skeptically means drinking responsibly. If there's one thing science has taught us, it's the effects of alcohol on the human body. I'll be bringing nametags this time for those of you who want to use them! Legend Brewery Co. is in the Downtown/Manchester area. They have Happy Hour specials until 7PM. There is a parking lot and there is also free street parking in the area. Feel free to come early if you would like, however the group gathering will begin at 7 PM. I will be getting our table at 6:30 PM and will have a Meetup sign. Please RSVP and remember to change your RSVP if you plans change so that enough space is held for the group.

The Art Of Soul Whispering Teleconference Process Group.
1 712- 432-0175 Pin 9447737# (whisper)... . The Art of Soul Whispering is a process and practice of learning to listen in to the depths of the soul and to be present to ourselves in a new way. It is based on the Pathwork material as well as other contemporary teachings. I am experimenting with this new Process Meditation that is a technique in learning the art of Soul Whispering. I am teaching it and applying it with individuals in a teleconference group. I have used it in our Wisdom of the Guide Teleconference Meetups. It is great to be able to support a deeper experience in these venues. I hope you come and try it. This forum will approach the work from the perspective of being a Soul Whisperer. We are building for a regular ongoing group now. Several people have joined me for intro's and there is a small core building. This group will remain ongoing and open to new members for a little while yet. I am excited about this little experiment that seems to be working, so come and check it out. Blessings everyone. I invite you to try a couple of meetings for free and then if it seems to be of value, I am asking for a 5-15 dollar donation. Blessings, Darlene

Carmelo Midili will present Spaziotempo in the Frable Gallery, and Hazel Buys will exhibit Bakers Dozen in the Helena Davis Gallery. The members' gallery will feature a group show by artspace members entitled All Media on the Media. All of these artists delight in the natural world and even beyond, as Carmen Midili ventures into an arena he calls Spacetime to indicate a particular spatial relationship his sculptures have to the room and the viewer. Laurie Hoen, a Richmond artist, is interested in the natural forms we encounter everyday. Holly Smith, also from Richmond, is fascinated by the macrocosm and the microcosms found in nature. Hazel Buys' paintings are inspired from a gift of cartons of eggs her friend presented her from her very own hens. These are small -scale still-life paintings.

"Forest For The Trees" Opens @ 1708 Gallery
Location:
319 W. Broad St.
Richmond, VA 23219

Note:
With their exhibition Forest For The Trees, Dana Sperry and Chad Erpelding challenge the viewer to look at the effect of globalization on the individual. Through the use of video, Sperry takes on a stance of isolation or disconnect. To express this view, he uses the movement of commuters in a fractured space. Each of Sperrys pieces considers different aspects of contemporary remoteness. Sperry states, I am exploring states of loneliness and isolation resulting from experiences that convey insignificance within a modern post-industrial society. With painting as his medium, Erpelding takes on a different perspective addressing a connection between various places. This connection is inspired by his research of the activities of major global corporations. Erpeldings work investigates the physical and mental spread of culture on a global scale through references to maps and charts.
Erpeldings website: www.chaderpelding.com 1708 Gallery is a non-profit arts organization committed to presenting exceptional new art. 1708 Gallery is committed to providing opportunities for artistic innovation for emerging and established artists and to expanding the understanding and appreciation of new art for the public.
